Mark;
For some one finger is higher than they are capable of counting. Using two fingers takes more intelligence if it is done properly. Interesting how the hands (and fingers) can communicate so much. The Italians use their hands to communicate and do a good job of it. The first time I saw an Italian waving “hello” towards themselves, I understood it to mean “hello - welcome” and away from themselves “goodbye”. It really made sense and did not require an explanation.
Now as for the proper response to the American one finger salute, you can reply: “Is that your IQ” or “Is that the number of legitimate parents you have”? That is from my high school days which was eons ago.
