With Sparse set to .T. only the active row uses the control you place in the grids column.
E.g. you have a memo field, and a editbox dropped in the grids column (and set as active control of course).
Now with sparse set to .T. you can only see the memo fields text in the active row. The other rows use a textbox. There you see only the text memo.
With Sparrse set to .F. the editbox shows up in the whole column, so you see the memo text now in all the rows, and not only in the active row.
