Hi all,
In light of recent questions posted about what software development skills to invest in I thought I'd do a simple search on the Boston Globe's classified section.
Here are the results by category by number of postings (descending):
These results are for the Boston area only.
Category: SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGES/TOOLS
Tool Postings
---- --------
Java 279
C++/Visual C++ 198
Visual Basic 139
XML 119
PERL 108
ASP 64
JSP 29
Lotus Notes 27
Delphi 3
Visual FoxPro 2
Category: DATABASES
Tool Postings
---- --------
Oracle 211
Sybase 94
SQL Server 60
From these results I would say that the Boston area does not favor MS-related development tools although Visual Basic and Visual C++ still remain quite popular. By far the most popular combination appears to be Oracle with Java or C++. I was also suprised to see SQL Server significantly below Sybase.
These are merely results from a single source on a single locale. I would encourage others to do similair searches on their locales or perhaps on a national/international level to get a true indication of what's in demand in today's corporate IT and software development markets.
