The difference between Mandrake and Red Hat... Well, basically, Mandrake is Red Hat compiled with a Pentium optimized compiler. And they both have a few different custom utilities.
The biggest difference between Red Hat and SuSE is the init system. Red Hat uses the SysV init scripts. SuSE uses the BSD option style.

Personally, I think that Mandrake is a farce. "Pentium optimized" binaries are larger, and thus take up more memory. So are they really faster? I don't think so. And if so, it isn't enough to warrant the extra memory.

I personally believe that Red Hat and SuSE are the two best distros out there. Debian is another large choice, but they seem so wrapped up in being completely free and nastalgic (sp?) that I think there product is difficult to install and even more difficult to maintain / secure.

Personnally, I would choose between Red Hat and SuSE. I like Red Hat because of the SysV init script system. But both Red Hat and SuSE support the RPM system for application installation / updating / removal / etc. Both Red Hat and SuSE have excellent support and documentation.
