I would say, however, that my personal experience was one of two vastly different cultures. My older brother remained in the area, Ft. Washington Md and I bet he would not think of himself as a from the south. I'll ask him and get back to you.
I'll talk to my Dad, who moved from College Station, TX to DC at 16 and see what he says. This was in the 40's. If memory serves, Washington itself was segregated in those days, completed with "White" and "Colored" signs.
