Kevin;

Your company will determine what it wishes to pay any employee and this is not a true reflection of the market.

In Silicon Valley there is a great deal of web development and about 98% is in Java I would say. There is very little application development using Visual FoxPro in this area.

I program in whatever language I am asked. If I do not know the language I will learn it. Management knows your skill level and has to understand if it is a new language and you are given the task it will take longer.

I do not use Frontpage or anything that resembles a wizard for web development. I use Visual Interdev only for the editor and debugger and none of its other features. That is our corporate policy for web application development.

To develop a web application on the level of a Client/
Server desktop application using ASP takes a lot more time than VFP.

If your company standard is Frontpage, then that is the skill set they want and are willing to pay for. It does not matter what you know – if you cannot sell it, it has no value!

A person that only knows Frontpage has a limited skill set but that may be all your company wants and requires for its customer base and to make a profit.

If you went to a VFP house and could only do Frontpage, you would be out of place. If your company did both Frontpage and VFP and VFP was more important, who do you think would get a higher salary, if they wanted to retain developers?

Another important thing to consider is the experience and skill set of the employee. If you know more than the job requires it will not be fun.

If I had no choice but to do Frontpage to support my family I would do it. Given a choice I would not consider this as anything I would be interested in even if it paid more.
