I can see the remote server and browse directories. However, when I try to register the remote server, I get an error back "SQL Server does not exist or access denied". I'm trying to use the SA account. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Well, we got this solved. Turns out there were two servers with the same name on the network. The wrong server was found first and caused the problem. An entry in the hosts file fixed this. Not ideal, but it works now.
