It is still possible that the amoutn of AVAILABLE RAM on the two machines is considerably different. Your desktop may have other stuff loaded into RAM when you run the query and there fore it force VFP to make the disk file. The laptop
may not have the same stuff loaded and therefore has enough RAM available to keep the data in memory, then there is no disk fiel and you get the error.
