I have gotten email working on my W2K server with SQL Server 7, and thought I'd post what I had to do ....

Outlook Express is installed by default when the OS is installed. Setting up an account in OE did NOT work. I needed to install MS Office for other reasons, and noticed that after having installed MS Office 97 I had a "mail and fax" icon in control panel. I suspect this is because I selected to install everything including Outlook 97. I created a profile and setup an account for Outlook 97. In doing this I noticed that the dialogs are identical for OE, but I don't believe they use the same information. Having setup a profile and account info, I was able to get email functioning.

There are two places in SQL Server 7 that need to be configured for email. You need to configure SQL Server Agent under the Management section, as well as SQL Mail under the Support Services section. Of course you need to also setup/configure operators to be notified. Having done all this, I now have the pleasure of receiving handfulls of emails from my SQL Server every morning.

As soon as I regain my composure, I'm gonna install and configure SQL Server 2K woohoo!

>Thanks for the input. Someone in my group has some Perl stuff they are using to run scripts and send email notifications. I'm looking into doing it all from within a sql script fired off by the SQL Server Scheduler. I'm hoping to find a method of sending email notification via an smtp server. If or when I do I'll post what I find.

>>Outlook Express is only a POP3 client, Outlook is a MAPI client.
>>Having done this a MAIL icon should appear in the Control Panel.
>>Quite how you connect SQL to this I don't know, so I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone else does!
