Wininet changing my directory?

Hi all!
I have a client app that uses some of the functionality in wininet to establish the default internet connection, do some FTP transfers, and then disconnect if appropriate.
This works great for my clients that are using dsl, aol dial-up, and lots of other isp's.
The problem: all of my clients who are using MSN crash when establishing a connection to MSN. Specifically, something is changing the default directory that my app is running in when the MSN connection is established. When a timer fires to update a status table, I get "File ...\MSN\...\tablename doesnt exist".
I'm referencing my table with full path, and have made sure that my app starts in "c:\myapp". Nothing in my code changes the directory. Since the user can establish an internet connection at any time in my app, I can't really issue a "set default to..." command unless i did so for every line of code that accesses a table.
I've made sure that my clients are using the newest version of MSN's software, although it appears that MSN is just using plain old dial-up-networking.

My hairs turning gray on this one, and I'm out of ideas. Any help is much appreciated.
