Sending developers to conferences is an expensive endeavor. There is the cost of travel, hotel, the conference, and on top of that, you will probably still draw a salary.
I think a conference can have a tremendous payback, especially if it is one's first conference. If you go year after year, I don't think the payback is as great due to the preponderance of repeated material from year to year.
Take this with the spirit with which it is intended...if you need to be provided with reasons why you should go to a conference, you may not be ready to go. Perhaps the payback won't be there. If the educational benefit is not clearly evident to either you or your boss, I don't know how else you would go about convincing your boss.
