You need to include all of your differentiating criteria in the group by clause:
SELECT PADR(City,30) as city, state, COUNT(*) AS Hits ;
FROM MyTable ;
ORDER BY Hits DESC ;
GROUP BY City, State

>this is really close, the only problem is that there can be more than one city name in two different states. like a boston, MA and a boston, NY or something. and they need to be treated seperately. thanks for your help so much!
