I don't think images can be added to the ImageList during runtime (or maybe prior to binding to the Tree). The images must (i think) be loaded no later than the binding. I don't think, however, that once the images are there you should have any problem reassigning the Tree's nodes a different image.
You can test it by driving from the command window. I'll post some code if you think it would be helpful.
