I've come across this problem recently as well. I don't have a solution yet, but here is what I've found.
An excerpt from MS VFP6.0 help file:
If you link an OLE object, your table contains only the reference to the data and to the application that created it. If you embed an OLE object, the table contains a copy of the data as well as a reference to the application that created it.
Knowing this and having a user in house that was experiencing the problem, I looked at the file associations for the image file in question (BMP in my case) The user with the problem had a file association for BMP to Adobe PhotoShop. My pointed to MS Paint and was fine. Once I changed my file association for BMP to Adobe Photoshop, I too had problems with my general field.
Now the problem, now that I did this and then changed back to MS Paint, I still have the problem. I think there must be something still in the Registry that I have not changed back correctly.
