If you really want to get bureaucratic, roll out a copy of the 7 layer OSI model. Show them that VFP is in the application layer and merely makes calls to the OS to open files. The OS then uses the low level transport protocols to handle this stuff.

I think the question that was put to me is really looking for some kind of grand answer when there is no special, proprietary protocol as such used by VFP (any more than is used by VS, Office, Lotus, or Borland apps, etc. for that matter). The OS does the controlling. Do you think I can get away with that kind of answer? No, it's not bureaucratic enough <g>.
