Not necessarily. In what I consider the real world [non-government, non-academia], competition is more fierce. It is this very competition in a free-market society that drives prices [and salaries] down and quality up. Conversely, there are government and academic positions where the private sector pays better. Just depends on where you are. I would suspect high dollar IT positions are more plentiful in Dallas than Amarillo, for example.
