Thanks Actually what I ended up doing was using SUBSTR(c_source,1,1). I tried using set exact on at the beginning but that didn't seem to work with his code. Only thing I can assume that he had set exact off as the default setting in his FoxPro configuration. I really don't know why he wrote code like that I too would have used substr or left.
