The biggest problem I have with Java is lack of performance. I have seen a couple of applications made in Java (the Linux Gnome shell, Netscape, Oracle tools), and I found those applications (running on Pentium 3s 400 to 650Mhz) sluggish compared to my home Pentium II 266Mhz. And I'm pretty sure it's not a question of inferior video board - for example, the Linux computer had a GeForce while I have an old ATI Xpert@Work. I lost patience very fast with such slow apps.

So, I'm still waiting to see a non-sluggish Java app. Until I do, I'd rather learn C++ than go with Java. Then again, I'd rather program in Delphi. And I don't agree with the general consensus: "Just buy a bigger computer!"
