Hi John,

The ultimate answer comes from counting the physical inventory if the counting process is reliable.

You starting point is the number in the database and when you count you adjust that number.

Recalculating inventory based on invoices/returns/inventory-replenishment might prove to be a major headache. If an invoice is somehow deleted from your database, there goes your accuracy. Same thing if an invoice is edited for whatever reason, not to mention that relying on this information to recalculate your inventory means that you cannot purge old transactions or have to consider now that as well for your design.

It also means that this process will be slower and slower as the number of transactions in the system grows.

I personally don't think it's a good idea (and have never seen it implemented this way), but let's wait and see what others may have to say.
