A socket is a value (much like a file handle) which is returned from either WINSOCK.DLL (3.1) or WSOCK32.DLL. This is then used as a reference for various functions. Dial-up networking uses it, File Transfer Protocol, etc. Sorry, can't think of a better description. Maybe Michel or someone else can explain it further.
