That has more to do with the developer than the language. There are several wonderful languages other than VFP, but if you haven't learned those languages, then they appear limited to you.

You have a ton of options here. You could write your apps in C(++), Perl, PHP, Python, whatever you want. You can write frontends in GTK, Java, etc.
