I could be wrong but AFAIK, NT can't send messages to other workstations unless WinPopup is installed. This was an old utility and I don't know if its still in use.

As for Novell, if you go under Control Panel - Network - Services and select the Novell Client for NT and click on the Properties button, there is a setting under the Advanced Settings: Receive Broadcast Messages. The default setting is to receive them from a Server Only distinguishing it as more important. You can set this to None to block all messages.

This is NT4 using Novell 4.X's client.
