Are you sure you stopped the Messenger service? I just tested here between NT Server and Workstation, both 4.0 SP6a. Stopping the service on Workstation caused a error "The message alias could not be found on the network." Just a quick test using NET SEND from a command prompt. Also, I believe Winpopup is only needed for pre WIN98 computers, per Q137143 in the KB. Is the popup captioned "Messinger Service"?
