Thanks for your replies, you guys.

It's "OK" that I have to map a drive, I just mentioned it because trouble-shooting why my images were scanning to nowhere drove me crazy.

The network traffic is minimal -- these scans are 30-200k, and even at a nominal 40 pages per minute, there's no slowdown or delay.
