Nadya,

Open the table exclusive and type "PACK" in the command window AFTER you have verified that there is sufficient on the drive in question to hold copies of the .DBF and .FPT involved. You will probably get away with marginally less space.
If it fails the original file(s) will be untouched.

This is a perfectly correct way to do it.
