This changes the situation. I assume that there is a NT server in use as a network server. It has probably to do with the opportinistic locking mechanism.

To isolate the problem you might try to switch off opportunistic locking (ID: Q129202) and benchmark the results.
There seems to be some noise on the network when the server requests the other client to break up to level 2 or none. Bottom line: it may be the problem is at another workstation or the server instead of your workstation.
