>Bram Stoker's starting point for his Dracula book was the (16th century?) Romanian nobleman, Vlad the impaler. I'm pretty sure that guy really existed, and really did stick people on spikes after battles, but all of that has little to do with what went on in Dracula. Often history is more gnarly than fiction. :)
