You can set uo NT2000 with 2 network cards, one being part of your office domain, the other being part of the internet world. The Internet Server has its own domain so even if hackers manage to crack their way in via the internet, they are still not part of the office domain and cannot access anything that way except stuff on the IIS server.

Then all you need is sensible database security. Sensible database security is the same whether you use NT or Unix- actually with the above technique the data can be in UNIX if you like.

We do it using COM servers that hackers cannot get at. We feel fairly safe. Of course somebody determined will always get in, same as somebody determined to rob your house will manage it.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
