Long time no hear!
I don't pretend to be an expert. I know that as of NT2000 you can have netbios on for the office card and off for the internet. That means you can "share" folders on the box inside the office without opening yourself up to netbios attacks from without.
This, plus a firewall, seems to give a reasonable level of security- unless you are specifically targeted, a hacker will prefer to focus on somebody who has neither because they are a far softer target and there are plenty of them.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
