This is just an impression, and by no means fact-

The content in MSDN magazine seems for the most part to be dictated from above. Much of the information contained within could only be obtained with insider information (many of the articles are written by MS developers). Many of the others are written by extremely high calibre authors and speakers (Don Box, Jeffery Richter, Mary Kirtland, Dino Esposito et al) about technologies that aren't even available yet. Though the samples in MSDN have to be in some language or other (increasingly C#), the concepts discussed are usually not language centric, but Windows centric. You'll see very few articles about VB specific features, and I can remember only one _ever_ about VFP (it was on the cover though, back when it was MIND).

When I pick up a copy of FPA (or even VBPJ), I get a familiar feeling of "I know him", or "Wow, I was wondering when he was going to write an article about that", or "they'll publish anything these days" (yes, that's true for VBPJ as well). When I pick up an issue of MSDN, I can't help but get the feeling that I'm reading something handed down from 'the big leagues'. I'm usually overwhelmed and humbled that there is so much that I don't know about windows programming. I often hear about technologies there for the first time, and those technologies months later go on to be a big part of my programming life. To tell you the truth, I'm intimidated.
