Seems like if they check every time they log in and the check keeps them functioning for another x days it would give them time to call you and set things right when a check fails.

What about them using something from the machine like SYS(0) or ID() to identify themselves?

Here at Duke you can get a static IP and vanity name with no extra charge, but you can't use it for outside business.
