This is the second try at answering - the first had an upload error, so you may see this stuff twice.
I've not been able to make a parent/child grid work consistently unless the child table has the FK as the active index tag. If I re-set it to the order I wish, then the grid no longer shows the correct record.
As for "depending on internal actions" that only meant that I got different results depending on whether the parent, the child or a third table was selected.
