Most likely, you need the windows driver for an internal speaker. I believe this item is in the list of available drivers on the Windows installation CD's.

In DOS, you could communiate with these devices directly. In Windows, you need a windows driver to accomplish the same task. Among DOS die-hards, Windows was often called the biggest TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program on the planet!!
