>We've done a little of Argentine tango, but are better with the more common American or International versions.
Cindy;
There are two versions of the tango - Argentine and French. In the Argentine tango the partners are apart at about arms length, and the French tango uses body lead - that is, the outside of the hip of the two partners touch and lead is given by following the right hand lead of the man as well as the body lead. The Argentine tango is more artful and thrilling to watch. Roudolph Valentino was great at the Argentine tango and George Raft at the French tango. By the way, these two men worked at the same dance hall at one point of their lives - 10 cents a dance.
As you may know, the Argentine tango was not popular in Argentina, with the upper class due to the fact it came from the "lower classes", who were enjoying the dance and music. Not until the dance found it's way to France and returned to Argentina did it become "respectable" and acceptable. After all, if the French were doing it it had to be alright.
