As long as no device is on COM2: - by default, COM2: and COM4: share an IRQ; COM1: and COM3: share IRQ 4, COM2: and COM4: share IRQ 3 in standard configurations. Several companies sell serial boards that will allow for alternate IRQ assignments, and you can then set the properties in Device Manager or the Port CPL under NT. You may need to modify the IRQ assignment for the COM4: port manually to assign it to a free IRQ if there's a collision with COM2: since the COM: ports don't cooperatively share IRQs in general. There are PCI serial adapters that will cooperatively share an IRQ. You might also consider a USB-serial adapter and attaching it via a USB port; a number of vendors offer USB-serial adapters and drivers to handle the USB-attached serial device.
