Bret;
Yes, transportation in the Bay Area is a problem but less so than Los Angeles. Bart was approved by the voters of San Francisco and Alameda counties in 1957. The first president of Bart (1957-1973) retired before the first bart train ran, at a retirement salary of $120,00/year.
San Mateo and Santa Clara counties did not want Bart. Santa Clara county (silicon valley) just voted to accept Bart. 1957-2000 - it took a while. No problem - we are patient as one may remember from proposition A, creation of Freeway 85 - once approved it took twenty years to build. After our 1989 earthquake, freeway 880 is still not complete. By the time a pot hole is filled in the Bay Area, a new freeway is built in Los Angeles. We pay more taxes in the Bay Area, but L.A. has the political clout (head count of registered voters).
The good life - it is not here as far as I am concerned. The good news is we have lots of jobs - the bad news - traffic, no affordable housing, and now the rolling blackouts. If you come from out of state to live and work here, I suggest you live in a camper, park at your place of employment and bring a power generator. You will be way ahead of the game!
