It is important to dimension the array as a two-dimensional construct if you want to have local scoping - it's the two dimensional aspect rather than the size of the dimension. Trying:

LOCAL aHold[1,1]

might help. Of course, if the number of elements created by the query exceeds 65,000, VFP will give you the lovely 'Too many variables' error (# elements = #rows x #columns, but you knew that...)
