Refer him to the Windows User Experience document (what used to be called the Windows Interface Guidelines). Or, just point out that for users with color blindness or other visual impairments, changing those colors can be the difference between an application being usable and not being usable. There's a reason Windows ships with high contrast color sets, after all.
