Not to get defensive or anything :) but ...
My own view is that WAIT WINDOWs fill a void in standard GUI interface. A messagebox is very obtrusive for a status window. I like seeing the understated WAIT WINDOW to let me know something is happening, but that it doesn't require any feedback from me.
Just my oddball view!
