Gary,
What type of error are you getting when the application tries to reach the server? Is it a connection time-out or something else?

What type of security are you using on SQL Server? Make sure that the user trying to log in has the proper rights on SQL server. If you are using a trusted connection and the user doesn't have access to the database you can get a connection error.

You mention a shared connection to the internet. Is this SQL Server not on your local network or running across a leased line (if located on a WAN)?

Sorry I can't be of much more help.
