Della,

>Does anyone have any experience with wireless networking? We're contemplating adding wireless access to our home "network," which is simply the LinkSys DSL/Cable router. We want to be able to use the laptop anywhere in the house (particularly in the recliner in front of the big screen TV or in the screened-in porch <g>).

We use them here at work and I've also contemplated using them at home as well. There are (if memory serves) a couple three of speeds you can get - 4MB, 11MB & now 22MB. I'd go for the 11MB model as the 22 is probably a little pricey still.

Now, the 'trick' is to set up a transceiver which will have two antennae, one for sending and one for receiving data. That effectively cuts your rated speed in half, so the 11MB card is really two 5.5MB (optimal) simulated wires. Also, going through 2x4s & drywall will cut your speed as it increases the need for retransmissions in the case of errors. Still, the advantage IMO makes it worthwhile.

The transceiver then is able to connect to a hub or router, which also would conect to your server or ??.

The transceivers we have here are (again if memory serves) around US$900.00. Cards for your laptop are around US$120.00 +/-. I'd go with Cisco as they seem to be the most technically adept. If you can swallow the cost of the transceiver then you're essentially home free. Of course, unless you have a mega-battery you really can't get completely away from draping wires. <g>

I intend to do this just as soon as it's justifiable.

Also, remember that anyone within range of your transceiver, if they suss out your domain etc will also be able to log on. <g> So, make sure your security is up to snuff..

HTH...
Best,
