As far as your original post... the reason I would be a little reluctant to lock the file at the OS level is, this takes all the power away from FP if a user is viewing a read only table and another user wants to get it Exclusively will FP be able to detect the user with it open readonly? I guess you could also get different results on different NOS's or OS's

don't really know any of this but just guessing (or Swagging as they say here)
