The aggregate size of 710 Word documents is about 20MB, but the FPT file of my table is just about double that, namely 40MB. As I am planning to add a couple of hundred records every month, I am worried about the size of this FPT file. I packed the table, but the FPT file size remains the same. I understand that the general field holds only a reference to the linked object. Why is the FTP file so big?

You've discovered one of the problems of doing things this way. There is a KB article on my web site that discusses memo file bloat. In addition, the memo allocates disk space in blocks. IMO, you're better off keeping the word document as a separate file and then just storing the file name.
