Walter,
after reading Q129202 it looks like oplocks can't be the problem. Oplocks gets turned off as soon as a 2nd station tries to write to the file. There are about 10-12 stations writting to the files. I did just find out that I have the same problem here in my office. We have the same Dell 4100 1GH and a Dell 1400 server running Windows 2000 with service pack 1. I had not tried it with a file already open till this morning and when I did I got the same thing. About 3 seconds to open a file that was already open so we know this is a Dell/Win 2K/VFP problem. By the way the Dell PCs are running Windows 98 SE. I'll let you guys know what I come up with. Thanks for the help so far. Let me know if you get any other ideas.

John.
