Well, there are companies out there that can do this for you. They are CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System) certified. That is, the USPS (US Postal Service) has certified that they do addresses in the manner that the USPS would like. You give them your data and pay their fee. They send your data back all cleaned up. This is the quickest and easiest way to go - but it costs.

The other way is to write your own. Using somone else's routines can help but will more than likely not be as closely you will need as this kind of data is often, as you say, a mess.

Well, you can either spend the dollars using someone else's routines or spend the dollars taking the time to write your own.
