Check the news blurb on the UT main page for the "Universal Thread Points" feature. There it explains the "star" points system.

You can mark a reply with a star by reading the thread reply and then going to the bottom of the page and selecteg the appropriate reward, either "helped thread" or "answered question". By selecting one or the other you are assigning "star" points to the submitter. For instance this reply should not qualify because this is not germane the nature of this thread.
