The answer is that it depends. If the bitmap was saved as a monchrome bitmap, its format is different than if it was saved as a 16, 256 or 24 bit color bitmap with just black and white colors. You can tell be simply opening the bitmap in the Paint accessory and doing a "Save As". If it says Monochrome or something else, that will tell you.

May I ask what you're trying to do? The reason is that there may be a utility available that can help.
