IMHO, it would be nice to have a limited edition of CR ship with VFP but forget the integration. To do that, one might have to forego or change the integration with the native report driver and that would kibbosh backwards compatibility with a lot of apps.

Remember a basic tenet of COM: Add new interfaces but never mess with the old.
