Dave,
>To beat this horse for the last time.... from your responses I am reading that you suggest replacing the 5.0 client with the 6.0 client on the developer machines. What I also think you are eluding to since I have said that I cannot upgrade my 5.0 databases to 6.0 is that I can use the 6.0 client ot work with the 5.0 database.... is this what your are in fact saying? I cannot find any documentation supporting that fact (perhaps no surprise there...) other than the following text within the VSS help itself which doesn't seem to agree.
The 6.0 client can read 5.0 and 6.0 databases with no problem...
What that documentation is saying is that you cannot access a 6.0 database with the 5.0 client. You can, however, access a 5.0 database with a 6.0 client. In other words, the new client can access any database, much like a new version of Word can open older formats of Word docs. But old VSS clients cannot access the new 6.0 format, just like an older version of Word cannot open a newer Word doc.
>Is this in fact what you are are suggesting and if so, I assume that this has been successful in your environment.
It has been successful so far. The 6.0 client works fine for accessing the 5.0 database and 6.0 database. The only issue is with confusing ourselves because we have some projects which exist in both. I recall you stating that your projects will be in one or the other, so you should have no problems.
Play around with it on your machine for a while and you will see what I mean about accessing both databases with the 6.0 client...it is hard to explain and envision without giving it a try...
Good luck!
