Since I last wrote, I started comparing the View in your Clients example to the View I had created for my form. Although the query worked within the View itself, I found a couple inconsistencies that cleared up my problem at runtime.

In the Filter condition, I had an equals sign (=) in the Criteria instead of the word "Like". And I had the "vp_" example inside an UPPER(), which I removed. Both of these changes solved the problem.
